How this framing calculator works
A stud wall is three takeoffs: studs on layout, plate stock, and sheathing. The calculator runs all three the way an estimator would:
plates = 3 × length in 16 ft boards · sheets = area ÷ 32 4×8 sheathing
Worked example: framing a 20 ft wall
A 20 ft wall at 16 in o.c. lays out 15 bays + 1 end stud = 16 studs. Add 2 for corners and 5% waste: 19 studs (92 5/8″ precuts for an 8 ft wall). Plates take 60 lineal feet — 4 boards of 16 ft stock — and the 160 ft² face sheathes with 6 sheets. At default prices the wall is about $208 in lumber and sheathing.
How many studs do I need?
One per 16 in plus an end stud, corners, and waste — or read it straight from the engine:
| Wall length | Studs @ 16″ o.c. | Studs @ 24″ o.c. | Plate boards (16′) | Sheathing sheets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 10 | 8 | 2 | 3 |
| 12 ft | 13 | 10 | 3 | 4 |
| 16 ft | 16 | 12 | 4 | 5 |
| 20 ft | 19 | 14 | 4 | 6 |
| 24 ft | 23 | 16 | 5 | 7 |
| 32 ft | 29 | 20 | 7 | 9 |
Stud spacing and layout rules
- Start layout at 15¼ in to the edge of the first field stud, so sheet edges land on stud centers all the way down the wall.
- 16″ o.c. suits 2×4 walls and heavy finishes; 24″ o.c. is allowed for many 2×6 walls (IRC R602.3) and aligns with "advanced framing".
- Openings frame separately: king + jack each side and a sized header — that's the extras field, not the layout count.
- Crowns up: sight every stud and turn crowns the same way; save the straightest for kitchen and bath walls.
Wall framing FAQ
How many studs do I need for a 20 ft wall?
19 at 16 in on center: 16 layout studs (one per 16 in plus the end stud), 2 more for corners or intersections, and 5% waste rounds it to 19. The old rule of thumb — one stud per foot of wall — lands in the same place once openings join in.
Should I frame at 16 or 24 inches on center?
16 in o.c. is the default for 2×4 walls and anything carrying tile or heavy finishes. 24 in o.c. is code-legal for many 2×6 walls (IRC R602.3) and saves roughly a quarter of the studs — the default 20 ft wall drops from 19 to 14 — but check your loads and sheathing spans first.
What length are precut studs?
92 5/8 in for 8 ft walls, 104 5/8 in for 9 ft, and 116 5/8 in for 10 ft. The odd lengths are deliberate: add a single bottom plate and a doubled top plate and the wall lands almost exactly on 8, 9 or 10 ft — no cutting.
How much plate lumber does a wall need?
Three times the wall length: one bottom plate plus a doubled top plate. The default 20 ft wall needs 60 lineal feet — four 16 ft boards with waste. Lap top-plate joints at least 24 in and never stack joints over each other.
How many sheets of sheathing per wall?
Wall area ÷ 32 (a 4×8 sheet), rounded up with waste — 6 sheets for the default 20 × 8 ft wall. Run sheets vertically on 8 ft walls so edges land on plates and studs without blocking.
