How this crushed concrete calculator works

Recycled concrete estimates exactly like virgin stone — volume times density — just a little lighter and a lot cheaper:

yd³ = (L × W × depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 · depth in inches
tons = yd³ × 1.35 × (1 + allowance%) → rounded up to ¼ ton

Worked example: crushed concrete for a 40 × 10 drive

400 ft² at 4 in is 133 ft³ — 4.94 yd³, or 6.7 tons of 21AA. With the 10% compaction allowance the order is 7.5 tons, about $225 at $30 a ton — the same lift in virgin limestone would run half again more.

Crushed concrete FAQ

How much crushed concrete do I need?

Volume × 1.35 tons per cubic yard: the default 40 × 10 ft driveway lift at 4 in is 4.94 yd³ — 6.7 tons, ordered as 7.5 with 10% compaction allowance, about $225 at $30 a ton.

Is crushed concrete good for driveways?

Yes — it is one of the best budget driveway materials. The residual cement fines re-bind as the material weathers, so a compacted crushed-concrete drive tightens into an almost paved surface that sheds rutting better than loose gravel.

How many tons of crushed concrete are in a cubic yard?

About 1.35 tons for graded 21AA with fines, a touch less for clean #57 recycled at 1.3 — recycled concrete runs slightly lighter than virgin limestone because the old mortar is porous.

How much cheaper is crushed concrete than gravel?

Commonly 30–50% less: $15–35 per ton in 2026 against $35–60 for virgin crushed stone, because the feedstock is demolition waste diverted from landfill. Supply is local — near a crushing yard it is the obvious base choice.

How much does a ton of crushed concrete cover?

60 ft² at 4 in deep — 80 ft² at 3 in, 40 at 6 in. The live coverage figure under the drawing tracks whatever depth you set.
